The Hubbard Street Dance Center announces a call for entries to its tenth annual Choreographic Competition to identify three emerging choreographers who will create original works for HS2, the second company of the internationally acclaimed Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (HSDC). The deadline for submissions to be postmarked is January 24, 2010. HSDC is committed to working with artists of diverse experiences and backgrounds and utilizes the National Choreographic Competition as a way to bring new voices into the repertoire.

Selected choreographers will participate in a two-week residency during the 2010-11 season to create an original work for Hubbard Street 2. Residencies may take place in Chicago or elsewhere in the United States with HS2 partners.

During the residency period, the work will be created on some or all of the six dancers of HS2. Choreographers may also be asked to teach a masterclass to HS2 and Lou Conte Dance Studio participants.

The commission includes:

  • $2000 stipend
  • 10 days of rehearsal time with the dancers
  • travel including round-trip transportation, per diem and accommodations

Hubbard Street 2 will premiere each new work during the 2010–11 season. Past winners include Robert Battle, Aszure Barton, Camille Brown, Maurice Causey, Brian Enos, Jonathan Fredrickson, Alex Ketley, Gabrielle Lamb, Edwaard Liang, Terence Marling, Andrea Miller, Katarzyna Skarpetowska, Lesley Telford, and Amy Raymond.

To apply for consideration, please send:
  • 2 minute excerpt of choreographic work (on DVD),
  • An entire choreographic work (on DVD)
  • Application Form including biography
  • 1-2 page proposal of choreographic intent
  • Music ideas, keeping in mind that HS2 occasionally performs with live music

Entries will be reviewed and final selections will be made by the Artistic Staff of HSDC.

Complete entries should be postmarked by January 24, 2010 and sent to:

Choreographic Competition 2010
Hubbard Street Dance Center
