Program Overview

Children and their families can experience the joy of dance in the unique environment of the youth studios at HSDC! The newly remodeled studios offer year-round programming for children ages 18-months through 13 years. Ranging from parent & child classes to family yoga and dance technique classes for older students, HSDC offers over 40 classes weekly.

The Youth Dance Programs at HSDC encompasses three divisions:

  • Early Childhood Program (ages 18-months-5 years)
  • Primary Program (ages 5-9)
  • Secondary Program (ages 7-13)
  • HSDC’s Youth Dance Program also offers unique family classes.

Beginning with classes that focus on creativity and moving through to the techniques that support contemporary dance, HSDC’s dance curriculum provides a balanced dance education. Our professional faculty provides a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning, considering each dancer’s individual development level and needs. Through age appropriate movement development goals, improvisation, dance vocabulary and technique, our students study all aspects of dance as they reach progressive levels of skill development and learn new ways to communicate their ideas. Dancers in the Youth Program improvise; engage in creative problem solving; use their imagination; and grow in cognitive, social and emotional ways as they gain proficiency in dance techniques and the choreographic process.

Come join us in an encouraging and creative environment where everyone is welcome!

    Class Descriptions

Early Childhood Program, ages 18 months-5 years

HSDC’s Early Childhood Creative Movement curriculum allows young students to explore their developing movement skills while interacting with caregivers and peers, slowly moving into independent classes at age three. Exploring the creativity and imagination of childhood, dancers have the opportunity to improvise, engage in creative problem solving and grow in cognitive, social and emotional ways as they interact in class.

Creative Movement (CM) Parent/Child Class (18 months – 3 years)
Exploring the many ways toddlers love to move, we’ll walk, run, wiggle, spin, and shake. Caregivers are an essential part of this class as we bounce, swing, twirl and jump to learn more about ourselves, others and the world around us accompanied by vibrant music and stories.  This classes offer new ideas to engage your child while repeating elements to build their skills throughout the year.

    Creative Movement (CM) (3–5 years)
Join us as we explore the different ways we move our bodies through space. As we study new dance concepts, we will learn to tell stories with our movements while dancing with our friends. This class changes every session.

    Storytime Dance (3-5 years)
Engage your child’s imagination as we dance through familiar stories and create some of our own. Students will explore award winning children’s literature, such as Harold and the Purple Crayon, Where the Wild Things Are, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

    KinderBridge (4-5 years)
Especially created for older preschoolers who’ve missed the kindergarten cut-off, this class reaches the kinesthetic learners as we explore early literacy skills through dance. Students will express how they think and understand the world through movement.

    Primary Program, ages 5-9

As they continue their exploration of the elements of dance (Body, Energy, Space and Time) students in the primary program explore these concepts in more complex ways – using partners, developing more advanced skills, learning simple dance combinations, and creating their own dances through beginning choreography. Primary dance students do all of this,  as well as begin to learn to work together as they create in trios and quartets, learning more complex skills and combinations and expanding their choreographic experience. As students mature, they explore dance concepts and develop skills in ever-increasing subtlety and depth. For each age group, there is repetition and challenge.

Creative Movement (CM) 5-7 years, level I
Exploring movement concepts, developing dance technique (?) and skills, and composing dances strengthens the body and mind and helps primary dancers become skilled movers and choreographers.

Creative Movement (CM) 5-7 years, level II
